— Rookparcel 1.2.21

The Files tab shows a torrent's files in their folders, as the Add Torrent dialog does, in every app; one click gives back the single list of paths. The Add Torrent dialog gets a file filter, and rookparcel-nox comes as a Docker image.

  • New: The Files tab's folder tree: folders add up their files' size and progress, and a priority set on a folder applies to all its files.
  • New: A Tree view button beside the filter box switches to µTorrent's single list of paths; the choice is remembered.
  • New: Add Torrent: a Filter files box to check or uncheck matching files in one go, and type-ahead to jump to a file by its first letters.
  • Windows: Typing in the torrent list and the detail tabs jumps to the matching row.
  • Web UI: The Add dialog and the Files tab work from the keyboard: arrows, Space and letters.
  • Daemon: A Docker image, ghcr.io/balls0fsteel/rookparcel-nox, for amd64 and arm64, with a Compose file for Sonarr, Radarr and Prowlarr.
  • Fix: The GTK app could close as soon as a torrent was listed on some systems (seen with GTK 4.22).

Version 1.2.20 was a development step; this entry covers it.

— Rookparcel 1.2.19

A native Mac app: one Rookparcel.app for Apple silicon and Intel Macs, on macOS 11 Big Sur or newer, which takes over the GTK app's settings and torrents. On every platform, a stopped magnet reconnects at once when started.

  • macOS: The same main window, menus and dialogs as on Windows and Linux, now built with AppKit, with ⌘ shortcuts, Full Screen and dark mode.
  • macOS: One app for Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 11 or newer: Intel Macs get the GUI too.
  • macOS: Preferences apply at once, with no OK or Apply; a value that cannot be used is shown in red.
  • macOS: A menu bar icon, completion notifications, a login item, and .torrent files and magnet links opened from Finder and browsers.
  • Updates: The first start takes over the GTK app's settings, torrents and profiles. Quit the old app first.
  • Fix: A magnet stopped from its Add dialog reconnects to its peer at once when it is started, not a minute later.

Versions 1.2.6 to 1.2.18 were development steps; this entry covers them. The Mac app is not notarised: the first time, right-click it and choose Open, or click Open Anyway in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

— Rookparcel 1.2.5

PaTorrent is now Rookparcel, with a new icon, the Postal Rook. Everything else is as in 1.2.0: settings, torrents, profiles and portable folders from PaTorrent are taken over at the first start.

  • New: The name: rookparcel.exe, rookparcel-gtk and rookparcel-nox, the repository Balls0fSteel/Rookparcel and this website.
  • New: The icon: a rook in a postal cap on a stamp, drawn by hand for the small sizes, on every platform and in the Web UI.
  • Updates: The first start moves PaTorrent's folders, settings, file associations and autostart entries to the new name. Close PaTorrent first.
  • Windows: The setup removes an installed PaTorrent; rookparcel-nox service install replaces a PaTorrent service.
  • Fix: A Web UI login that arrives after its address was banned is answered "banned", not "Fails.".

PaTorrent does not offer this update by itself: install Rookparcel by hand once. Flatpak users copy two folders first; the release notes say how. A GUI and the rookparcel-nox it drives remotely must both be 1.2.5.

— Rookparcel 1.2.0

Profiles run several independent Rookparcels side by side, and portable mode now works on every platform. A bug hunt fixed a Web UI login bypass and a peer message that crashed the engine, so every user of 1.1.40 should update.

  • New: Profiles: File > Profiles or --profile work starts a separate Rookparcel with its own settings, torrents, ports and window, in both GUIs and rookparcel-nox.
  • New: Portable mode on Windows, Linux, BSD and macOS: an empty rookparcel.ini keeps everything in the program's folder, with relative paths, so the folder can move without a recheck.
  • New: A Setup Guide at a profile's first start asks about downloads, your router, your disks and starting with the system. Options > Setup Guide opens it again.
  • New: Help for every setting: tooltips, a help pane under each Preferences page, and F1.
  • New: A filter in the Files tab shows the files whose path contains the words you type.
  • New: Use only this network (Preferences > Connection) binds torrent traffic to a VPN adapter, a named adapter or an address range, and waits while it is missing.
  • Search: An optional search helper downloads Jackett at your click, checks it and runs it on this computer only while you search.
  • GTK: Every other row is shaded, and Ctrl+S, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+Shift+P and Enter work as on Windows.
  • Fix: A move or priority change no longer stalls every transfer behind another torrent's check; peers that connect during a check are served; UPnP no longer spins after a port change.
  • Security: A bug hunt found 38 problems and fixed 37 (one was not a problem), among them a Web UI login bypass, two ways a peer or web seed could crash the engine, and a crafted file name that escaped its folder.

Settings and torrents from 1.1.x carry over unchanged. A GUI and the rookparcel-nox it drives remotely must both be 1.2.0. A portable folder written by 1.2.0 needs 1.2.0 or later.

— Rookparcel 1.1.40

A gamer mode that keeps your ping low while Rookparcel downloads, and smart disk I/O that keeps checks and transfers from hogging your disks. The Windows GUI now updates itself, and both GUIs show what they are doing while they close.

  • New: Gamer mode: Keep ping low (Preferences > Bandwidth, off by default) slows uploads and downloads down as soon as your line starts to queue. On a test line the ping fell from about 480 ms to 10 ms at 80-92% of the line's speed.
  • New: Smart disk I/O (Preferences > Advanced > Disk I/O): checks run at background disk priority and give way to other programs, one torrent per drive with several drives at once, optionally capped in MB/s.
  • New: Rookparcel tells SSDs, hard disks and network shares apart and keeps a hard disk to two jobs at once. If you want, it slows downloads or uploads down while a disk is busy.
  • Updates: An installed Windows copy downloads the new setup, checks it, installs it and starts again. The update box appears once per version; after that a notice stays in the status bar.
  • New: A window shows what Rookparcel is doing while it closes: moves, saving, trackers. Quit Now cancels the moves and leaves every torrent in its old folder.
  • Windows: Signing out or shutting down waits while Rookparcel saves its torrents and progress. Starting it again while it closes no longer gives up after 5 seconds.
  • New: The Files tab has µTorrent 2.2.1's menu: Open, Open Containing Folder, Prioritize by File Order, Priority, Don't Download and Relocate. A double click opens a file.
  • New: "Append the torrent's label" moves a finished labelled torrent into a folder named after its label.
  • Fix: Fixes from libtorrent 2.0.12 to 2.1.2: v2 requests and piece layers, hybrid reannounces, renames that never overwrite, smaller resume data, web seed file names, the IP filter on the DHT.
  • Fix: Transfer totals no longer count part of the traffic twice under a rate limit.
  • Security: The release review fixed 15 low-severity findings, each with a test.

Settings and torrents from 1.1.x carry over unchanged. A GUI and the rookparcel-nox it drives remotely must both be 1.1.40. An installed 1.1.17 still needs this setup run by hand once.

— Rookparcel 1.1.17

Torrent search through your own Prowlarr or Jackett, in both GUIs and the Web UI. The Windows GUI's Web UI gains the RSS Downloader, and rookparcel-nox now checks for updates too.

  • Search: Search for torrents through the Prowlarr or Jackett you already run (Torznab). Rookparcel has no search plugins or site scrapers of its own, so nothing breaks when a site changes.
  • Windows: The arrow beside the toolbar's search box picks a source or All sources; Enter opens Search Torrents, where results can be sorted and added.
  • GTK: The menu beside the search box does the same on Linux, BSD and macOS.
  • Web UI: A Find button beside the filter box opens the same search.
  • Search: Manage Sources adds, edits, tests and switches sources. API keys are stored encrypted on Windows. A source on this computer or your local network is reached directly; a public one goes through your proxy, if you set one.
  • RSS: The Windows GUI's Web UI has the RSS Downloader: it edits the window's own feeds and filters.
  • Security: For Sonarr, Radarr and Prowlarr: an optional API key and an optional list of subnets that need no login (Web UI Preferences > Authentication). Both are off by default and need the current password to change.
  • *arr: An add without a folder goes to its category's folder; in the Windows GUI's Web UI, unused categories survive a restart; tags are accepted and ignored, so the apps stop logging warnings.
  • Windows: Preferences > Web UI has a Server domains field, for apps that reach Rookparcel by a host name.
  • Daemon: rookparcel-nox checks for a newer release like the GUIs: it prints a line and shows a link in the Web UI. --no-update-check or the Web UI's General > Privacy turns it off.

Settings and torrents from 1.1.x carry over unchanged.

— Rookparcel 1.1.7

The Windows GUI serves a Web UI of its own, and Rookparcel works as a download client for Sonarr, Radarr and Prowlarr.

  • Web UI: Preferences > Web UI in the Windows GUI serves the same Web UI as rookparcel-nox, over that window's torrents. It is off by default; the password is stored hashed, and HTTPS with a self-signed certificate is one tick.
  • Web UI: From the browser: add, start, stop, pause, label and remove torrents, and change the rate limits and most preferences. Changes show in the window within a second, and the other way round.
  • *arr: The seed ratio and seed time an indexer sends with a grab become that torrent's seeding goal.
  • *arr: The limits are reported back, so the apps' Remove Completed removes a torrent once Rookparcel has stopped it.
  • Fix: A refused host name now gets an error that says how to allow it: Preferences > Web UI > Server domains.
  • Fix: A seed without peers keeps counting its seeding time, so a time-based seeding goal stops it on time.
  • Windows: Opening a .torrent or magnet while Rookparcel runs brings its window forward (on by default). A torrent added stopped reads Stopped.
  • Security: rookparcel-nox service install on Windows stores the Web UI login hashed, no longer on the service's command line, which every local user could read. --replace and --now make a changed setup one command.

1.1.2 was prepared but never published; its changes are in 1.1.7.

— Rookparcel 1.1.0

A search box, importers from qBittorrent and µTorrent, and fixes across the engine, the Web UI and remote mode after a security review of the whole code base.

  • New: A search box in the toolbar filters the torrent list by name as you type; Ctrl+F jumps to it.
  • New: File > Import adds the torrents of qBittorrent (BT_backup) or µTorrent (resume.dat) with their save folders, labels and settings, and checks the files again. rookparcel-nox run --import does the same.
  • Security: The DHT ignores replies it did not ask for, no peer connections go to ports below 1024, and feeds and redirects cannot reach your local network unless you added that address yourself.
  • Security: HTTPS needs TLS 1.2 and refuses revoked certificates. The Web UI limits connections before login, bans per client and asks for the current password before its security settings change.
  • Security: The GUIs connect to a rookparcel-nox over HTTPS by default; plain HTTP to another computer needs your agreement first.
  • Fix: Windows: stopped torrents no longer show their last speed, rows no longer go blank after hovering or Select All, and the scheduler grid no longer flickers.
  • Windows: Alternating row shading, and Ctrl+S, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+Shift+P and Enter for Start, Stop, Pause and Properties.
  • New: Icons beside the category list, the detail tabs and the Preferences pages (Windows and GTK), and beside the Windows menu commands.

Update both sides for remote mode: the remote protocol changed, so a GUI and a rookparcel-nox must both be 1.1.0 or newer to work together.

— Rookparcel 1.0.1

The first stable release, with a Windows installer and an update check that only tells.

  • Windows: An installer beside the portable zip: for you alone or for all users, with a Start menu entry, .torrent and magnet associations, in-place upgrades and an uninstaller that keeps your settings unless you ask.
  • Updates: The GUIs read a small list of releases from this website at the start and every 12 hours, and show a newer version in the status bar. Nothing is downloaded or installed for you.
  • Updates: Help > Check for Updates asks at once; Preferences > General > Privacy turns the automatic check off. The Flatpak leaves updating to Flathub.
  • New: The version shows where µTorrent showed it: the window title, the tray tooltip, the Web UI's tab and the Windows files' properties.
  • New: Help > Rookparcel Website, and this website: downloads with how to start each file, the FAQ and the documentation.

There is no 1.0.0: its build stopped on a packaging check, and the version moved on. 1.0.0-rc.1 has no update check, so fetch 1.0.1 or newer by hand.

— Rookparcel 1.0.0-rc.1

The first public build: a release candidate for 1.0, for people who want to try it and report what breaks.

  • New: The engine, our own Rust port of libtorrent-rasterbar 2.0.11: TCP and uTP, trackers, magnet links, DHT, peer exchange, encryption, web seeds, proxies, UPnP / NAT-PMP, IP filters, and BitTorrent v2 and hybrid torrents.
  • Windows: The µTorrent 2.2.1 main window with every column and detail tab, Preferences, the Add, Create and Properties dialogs, the RSS downloader, the scheduler and the tray icon. A portable zip, nothing to install.
  • GTK: The same main window and dialogs on GTK 4, for Linux, BSD and macOS.
  • Linux: An AppImage, a Flatpak bundle and plain binaries, for x86_64 and aarch64.
  • macOS: A disk image for Apple silicon; the headless daemon for Apple silicon and Intel.
  • Daemon: rookparcel-nox runs headless with its own Web UI, HTTPS and a qBittorrent-compatible Web API subset, as a systemd, rc.d or Windows service.
  • New: English and 34 more languages, right-to-left layouts included; the translations are machine-made and unreviewed.

Every change, with what was tested, is in the changelog.
